Requirement

Ulster University’s Curriculum Management System was developed by a previous Agency partner, STCS were commissioned to assume support and enhancement responsibility for the system which was written in .NET.

We conducted a full onboarding process to gain an in-depth understanding of the system, interfaces and dependancies before undertaking an initial project to clear a backlog of bug fixes and small amends.

The system was experiencing significant performance issues including a file generation process which regularly timed out. STCS were tasked with optimising the code and process, vastly reducing the time to generate files from minutes to seconds, ensuring the process no longer timed out when high volumes were required.

Outcomes

The Curriculum Management System is now a stable platform requiring significantly less support. We continue to maintain the system and provide call off support for break/fix issues or further enhancements as needed.

Requirement

Ulster University needed a software support partner that could provide a rapid response service with flexible capacity.   The initial brief was to familiarise ourselves with a portfolio of 33 systems for which Ulster required documentation, support and further enhancement. This portfolio includes three mission critical systems – Online Prospectus, Online Enrolment and Online Graduation.

The majority of the systems were developed in-house by Ulster University using object oriented PHP and the Zend Framework. Over time, staff turnover and changing roles left Ulster with a limited number of resources with enough domain knowledge to provide support for these systems.

STCS committed to make up to three developers available with knowledge and experience of Ulster’s systems, as well as a project manager/business analyst to ensure we have the resources to undertake substantial project work alongside day-to-day break/fix support.

Under this contract STCS led a major enhancement project to their Online Prospectus System (OLP).  OLP is essentially a data repository that receives course data from Ulster’s Curriculum Management and Banner systems through system to system interfaces and allows for the annual update and review of course marketing information such as ‘How to Apply’, ‘Career Options’ and ‘Testimonials’.  The overall set of course marketing data is then transmitted to their front-end CMS via XML feeds.

Outcomes

The service we provide is closely integrated with Ulster University’s IT Department and the STCS team integrates seamlessly with the University’s own in-house resources.  In addition to general support activity we have undertaken numerous development projects which have been successfully delivered within tight timescales dictated by the academic calendar.
